The municipality of Gilching is located in the north of the district of Starnberg in the Bavarian Oberland and is part of the Munich metropolitan region. It is located around 20 kilometers west of the state capital of Munich and forms a transitional area between the urban conurbation of Munich and the more rural foothills of the Alps. Gilching is part of the so-called five-lake region and lies to the north-east of Lake Ammersee, which means that the municipality benefits both scenically and climatically from its proximity to the Upper Bavarian lakes. Gilching is very well connected in terms of transportation. The municipality has two S-Bahn stops on the S8 line, which provide a direct connection to Munich city center and Munich Airport. In addition, the A96 highway (Munich-Lindau) runs south of the local area and connects Gilching to the national road network. The transport infrastructure is supplemented by federal and state roads, which ensure quick access to the surrounding lakes - especially Ammersee and Starnberger See. The settlement structure of Gilching is characterized by a mixture of established town centers, residential areas and commercial areas.
